Check out our comprehensive logical reasoning test guide to learn more about the types of tests that could be covered. Deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning tests are very different, so it’s important to prepare for them both separately. Deductive reasoning is also known as top-down reasoning. This sets its apart from inductive reasoning which is known as bottom-up. It uses the same kind of premises and conclusions that deductive reasoning does, but presents them in the reverse order.

Deductive reasoning is the act of making a generalized statement and backing it up with specific scenarios or information. It can be thought of as a “top down” approach to drawing conclusions. For example, consider the statement “all apples are fruits.” Some deductive reasoning does not follow the syllogism model. In these cases, one of the premises is omitted because it is considered that this is obvious or that can be inferred from the rest of the statement. For this reason, this type of deductive reasoning is more difficult to recognize.

Deductive reasoning is one of the two basic forms of valid reasoning, the other one being inductive reasoning. The main difference between these two types of reasoning is that, inductive reasoning argues from a specific to a general base, whereas deductive reasoning goes from a … 2020-02-20 Deductive reasoning, also known as top-down logic, is defined as the ability to make inferences about the veracity of a conclusion based on several, often competing, hypotheses. 2021-04-17 2019-07-25 2020-08-20 Deductive reasoning is also known as top-down reasoning.

Critical Thinking: Inductive and Deductive Reasoning

Difference between inductive and deductive reasoning

The major premise is simply a rule of general applicability or put differently, a rule that applies not just to a single person or situation, but rather to a category of people or situations. An example of an argument using deductive reasoning leading to erroneous conclusion: All police officers are instruments of law. (First premise) The piano is an instrument. (Second premise) Therefore, all police officers are pianos.

Deductive reasoning assumes that if all premises are true, the terms are clear, and the specific rules of deductive logic are followed, then the conclusion reached is correct. Deductive reasoning is one of the two basic forms of valid reasoning, the other one being inductive reasoning.
